Play Time

I haven’t posted anything lately, so I thought I’d share some pictures of Benjamin playing. That’s what he does most of the time now. He’s very busy, and Brad and I have been lately, too. We decorated our house for Christmas already (because we hosted an early Christmas party this weekend), so now we can settle in and enjoy the holidays without having to worry about taking boxes out of the attic, putting lights on the tree, etc. On to the pictures…

At the Play Area

Last night Benjamin experienced his first mall play area, in all of its energetic, magical glory. And no surprise, he loved it! From the moment I set him down on the soft floor, he was crawling toward the action, and soon he was yelling with excitement and glee. Of course, after about 20 minutes his energy level crashed, and he was content to watch everyone else play from the comfort of my arms.

This particular play area has play equipment designed to look like various food, dishes, and utensils laid out on a blanket – a picnic spread for a giant, I suppose. We met up with my friend Natalee and her two boys, Simeon and Caleb, for an after dinner play fest.

We lingered around one corner of the play area to avoid the older, wilder, running children. However, Benjamin’s tiny cuteness attracted throngs of kids at one point, and it was actually quite overwhelming for me. One moment he was giving Caleb and Simeon sweet kisses, and the next we were surrounded by ten children all wanting in on the action. Natalee helped me out by shooing them away, as I was left speechless by the suddenness of the attack.

Despite my lack of knowledge of kids’ social politics at mall play areas, a grand time was had by all. I took the camera along, so here’s a look at Benjamin’s first play time at the mall:

Tales from the Crib

Benjamin is enjoying all sorts of new adventures in his crib.

Benjamin is enjoying all sorts of new adventures in his crib.

Benjamin’s excitement of late has centered around his crib. It’s not that he is upset when we put him down for a nap. It’s that he is too thrilled when we put him in his crib. He can be exhausted, yawning, rubbing his eyes… but the minute his head hits the mattress, it’s as if someone has given him two shots of espresso! Within 30 seconds of me leaving the room, he has unswaddled himself, pulled up on the side of the crib, and started bouncing around and delightedly chattering away.

Thus commences our new routine of going in his room, reswaddling him, and telling him to settle down. Usually we are required to follow these steps up to five times, over a course of 15 to 45 minutes, before he will surrender to sweet sleep. Sometimes the cheerfulness of his rebellion is rudely interrupted by some unforeseen accident or frustration. Some days, he gets “stuck” in a standing position, his jaws clenched down on the top of the crib gate, and we have to go in a rescue him from where he stands, crying and frustrated about why he can’t figure out how to move.

Just this morning, his cries were more frantic, so I went in to check on him quickly. What I discovered was his first bloody injury. :( It wasn’t a busted lip, as was my first impression. Turns out, his mouth had slipped while he was biting down on the crib gate, and his bottom teeth had cut into his top gum line. (Ouch!) To make matters worse, this injury occurred just where his two front top teeth are just now about to break through. Imagine my surprise, though, to discover blood running down my baby boy’s lip and even staining his pjs – when all he’s suffered before now are a few bruises, but no cuts. (Well, there was the first time I clipped his fingernails and accidentally cut into the quick, but I think it hurt me more than it hurt him.)

Benjamin takes a break from his crib bouncing to show how good he is at standing up.

Benjamin has been working extra hard on cutting his two front top teeth. It looks painful!

So, when he’s not hurting himself (who knew a crib could be such a source of potential danger?), he is having a grand old time. In case you are wondering, we have lowered the crib mattress, but perhaps we need to lower it even more to discourage his crib galavanting. And since today he figured out how to grab a wall hanging off of the wall, we need to rethink the layout of the decor in his room.

Does anyone have other suggestions for how we can get Benjamin to settle down for his naps?

The Play Room

Now that Benjamin is in full-fledged crawling mode, we decided it was time to finally convert our “dining room” (which we only used as such for a few months while it housed Cara and David’s dining table during the most involved of their house renovations) into a play area for him. A few days ago, we moved a shelf, a ficus tree, a rocking chair, and a china hutch (can’t have that in a playroom!) from the dining room into the guest bedroom. That just leaves a roll top desk, a wooden coffee table, and lots of open space for Benjamin to play in.

We have made it as safe as we know how to, from a safety cord on the window blinds, to outlet covers, to a thick quilt over the top of the coffee table, to blocking his access to as many sharp corners as I can. Despite our best efforts, the room is (surprise!) not baby proof. He has already managed to bump his head twice, once when he tumbled from a standing position at the window and hit his head on the sill, and again when he crawled under the coffee table and then lifted his head up (ouch). Those bumps were taken care of with some TLC and with ice to prevent bruising, which brought lots of sad tears that were met with more snuggles.

I took some pictures to provide a quick photo tour of our modest play area. There are no elaborate murals on the wall, no matching furniture or colorful storage solutions. It’s just a bright, sunny, relatively clean area for Benjamin to play in, and a place where we can keep most of his toys without them cluttering up our living room. It is nice to sit down during his naps or after he has gone to bed, and be able to watch tv without being distracted by a multi-colored caterpillar, or without tripping over a big block that starts singing, “Yellow lion in the African sun, tickling your mane is very fun. He-he-he. ROAR!”

Benjamin at Eight Months

At eight months old, Benjamin is really starting to outgrow his bouncy seat. However, he still enjoys sitting in it, and he hasn't even tried to climb out of it yet. As long as we can squeeze him into it, we'll keep using it.

I am a few days late on my monthly development update, so let’s get started.

Benjamin’s personality and favorite things at eight months:

  • He is still laid back, and is pretty much cool with his environment, whether it’s a four hour road trip, a “big list” Walmart shopping day, the kids’ club at my gym, or an uneventful afternoon at home.
  • His latest acquired skill is waving “hi” and “bye.” His early attempts looked more like he was hitting himself in the stomach with his hand, but over the past several days he has managed to lift his arm up and wave in a left to right motion. He’s still working on holding his palm up while waving.
  • Before moving on to waving, he perfected his clapping ability. He claps any time he is happy about something, when he hears music, or when anyone else claps. His enthusiasm is contagious!
In this picture, Benjamin was clapping by request. But usually, he is inspired to do so without being asked.

  • He is taking advantage of his crawling ability and using it to explore the far reaches of the living room, and he has even ventured into Brad’s office and our bedroom. We know super speed crawling isn’t too far in the future, so we are working hard to safe guard the house as well as we can, and we’re also practicing keeping doors closed to limit our search radius if we lose sight of him.
  • He experienced his first bumps and bruises last week, when he bumped his head (really hard!) three times in the course of two days. We’ve since learned that we should steer him away from door frames and the edges of furniture. Putting ice on his bumps helped prevent bruising, but he wasn’t too happy about the cold sensation that came with the process. All you parents of boys are probably shaking your heads and thinking these first few bumps are nothing compared to what’s ahead. That’s true, but that didn’t make these first few accidents any less scary and “ouchy” for Benjamin.
  • He remains very interested in Chloe, and she hasn’t yet adjusted to his crawling. She used to be safe when sitting a few feet away from him, so now she acts surprised when she’s watching him, closes her eyes for a moment, and he suddenly is clutching at her fur. She’s a good sport about it, and when she gets overwhelmed she just walks away. It’s sweet that she knows to be gentle with him.
  • He likes to give big, wet kisses, but not to just anyone. Mostly he kisses his cousins, Jacob, Joel, and Anna. His version of a kiss involves grabbing someone’s cheeks to pull them closer to him, and then he just dives in with an open mouth and plants a big, slobbery kiss on their cheek, forehead, mouth, nose – whatever part of their face happens to be where he lands. It’s very cute, but a little messy.

Nana came for a visit a week and a half ago, and stayed for several days. She brought Benjamin some fun new toys, including some soft blocks, a walker, and a Tickle Me Elmo doll. These give him more opportunities to explore new things.

We've enjoyed beautiful weather lately, which gave Nana and Benjamin a chance to hang out together outside.

Benjamin had the best of two worlds here. He was standing up in his new walker, and he was playing with some of his fun new blocks.

I’ll close with a video that is a pretty good picture of what Benjamin is like these days: happy, smiling, drooling, bouncing, “talking,” and clapping.

Benjamin’s First Sporting Event

We had seats at midfield, so we had a great view of all the action at Benjamin's first Tech football game. It was a beautiful day, with temps in the '70s, and best of all, we were on the shaded side.

We went to Ruston this weekend for Louisiana Tech’s Homecoming. We managed to fit in a lot of activity, including a dinner out to celebrate my mom’s birthday, getting together with old friends to reminisce about our college days, and cheering the Dawgs to victory at the Saturday afternoon football game.

Benjamin wasn’t sure what to think of the band, the cheering, the whistling, and the heckling, but before too long he picked up on his role as a fan. Every time the crowd would start cheering and clapping, he would clap right along with them. During the timeouts, he had fun bouncing and dancing around to the music the band would play.

Here are some pictures from the game that tell the rest of the story:

Benjamin had his hat and sunscreen as protection from the afternoon sun, but by the second quarter we were in the shade, and so enjoyed perfect weather the rest of the game.

The sweetest thing about Benjamin's game time nap was that he fell asleep while examining the lady's bracelet, and it remained firmly clasped in his hand while he slept.

We all left the game happy, since the Dawgs pulled out a victory by pulling ahead of Fresno in the last few minutes. Benjamin loved being outside and having so many people and things to look at. We look forward to many more sporting events to come.
